Are we becoming intolerant?

Gujarat cinema hall owners have decided to not screen Aamir Khan's latest film Fanaa because the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party is peeved at the actor's comments about the Narmada dam issue and his criticism of the Narendra Modi government over the communal divide in the state.

M F Husain's exhibition in London's Asia House was forced to shut down after pressure from Indians miffed at the artist's portrayal of gods and goddesses.

And when The Da Vinci Code releases in India on Friday, many movie theatres will have extra security to dissuade mob violence.

Are these headlines worthy of a great, tolerant and all-encompassing country and people like ours?

Are we becoming retrograde and intolerant? Are we becoming overtly sensitive about religion? Are our leaders and political parties increasingly hostile to criticism, however mild?

Is our liberalism at threat?
