Militants on Sunday carried out an attack on a rally organised by the Youth Congress to remember former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on his 15th death anniversay at Sher-e-Kashmir Park in Srinagar.

Intense firing was on in the area where several deafening explosions were also heard, official sources said.

A number of people were injured in the attack which took place at 1:15 pm. The gunshots and explosions sparked panic in the entire city including Lal Chowk, the summer capital's business hub.

A number of militants were involved in the attack, the sources said. The attack on the rally, organised by the Jammu and Kashmir unit of the Youth Congress, took place minutes before Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad was scheduled to arrive at the venue.

The sources said a number of senior Congress leaders, including some Ministers, were present inside the fenced Park when the ultras carried out the suicide attack.
