Srinagar: 1 jawan killed in blast

One Central Reserve Police Force jawan was killed and five were wounded in a powerful explosion in Jammu and Kashmir's [Images] summer capital Srinagar [Images] late on Friday morning.

The police said an improvised explosive device planted close to a CRPF bunker exploded on Ali Jan Road in downtown Srinagar.

A vehicle belonging to the paramilitary force was also damaged in the powerful explosion.

The injured were rushed to the nearby Soura Medical Institute, where head constable Madan Singh succumbed to injuries.

Doctors said they others had sustained serious splinter injuries.

The blast rattled the entire neighbourhood. Ali Jan Road is heavily guarded by the CRPF and dotted by bunkers.

On Thursday, two powerful hand grenade explosions rocked downtown Srinagar and security was beefed up. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the blast.

The injured were identified as Assistant Commandant Abdul Rashid, head constables M W Khan, Constables Mehar Din, Dinesh Kumar and Abisheikh Sharma.
