Muraleedharan to contest Kerala assembly polls

March 30, 2006 15:40 IST

Reversing his earlier decision to keep off the electoral fray, Democratic Indira Congress (Karunakaran) president K Muraleedharan has announced his candidature from the Koduvally assembly seat in Kozhikode district of Kerala.

The DIC (K) Parliamentary Board meeting on Thursday cleared the candidature of Muraleedharan, son of party supremo K Karunakaran.

Muraleedharan toldmedia personsthat DIC(K) would strive for the victory of the Congress-led United Democratic Front with which his party had struck seat adjustments. Koduvally was offered to the DIC(K) by the Indian Union Muslim League as a special gesture towards the Karunakaran-led party.

IUML, which won Koduvally last time, had played a crucial role in bringing the DIC-K to the UDF camp. In exchange, the DIC(K) has given the North Wayanad seat to IUML. The DIC(K) had earlier announced candidates for 17 seats allotted to it.
