The Indo-US deal on civilian nuclear programme was a "practical step" towards moving forward in the field of energy security, Chairman of Atomic Energy Commission Dr Anil Kakodkar said Thursday.

Kakodkar said if the deal is cleared by the US Congress, it would help grow and sustain India's energy needs.

He emphasised that India's indigenous three-stage atomic energy programme will continue without compromising its R&D programme on thorium.

On the identification of the civilian nuclear facilities, he said, "We are working on that and details of the 14 facilities which would be placed under international safeguards would be made available within few days."
