March 04, 2006 13:17 IST

Extensive raids were being carried out at suspected militant hideouts in and around the Kozhikode district following two powerful blasts for which an unknown outfit has claimed responsibility, police said on Saturday.

A high-level meeting of police officials, led by DIG B Sandhya, reviewed the situation this morning, they said, adding that as part of the ongoing probe, special police teams had been dispatched to neighbouring Malappuram and Kasaragod districts. Also, three persons were being interrogated in connection with Friday's explosions.

Al Kanoon Kerala, a previously unknown outfit, had reportedly informed a newspaper office in Kozhikode that it was behind the blasts, they said.

Meanwhile, two country-made bombs were recovered from near the Vengali over bridge in Kozhikode on Friday night and bomb disposal squad defused the explosives immediately, police said. Security had been tightened at vital places, including the railway station and police patrolling had been intensified at the district jail, they said.
