Chinese media frowns at N-deal

March 03, 2006 17:34 IST

The historic India-United States nuclear deal may set a 'bad example' for other countries, the Chinese media commented on Friday.

'There are concerns that the move will set a bad example for other countries as India has refused to sign the Non Proliferation Treaty after it conducted nuclear tests in 1998,' the official Xinhua news agency noted.

At the same time, it pointed out that the deal will allow India access to uranium, US civilian nuclear technology and bring India out of 'nuclear isolation.'

China Daily, Beijing's leading English-language newspaper, gave the India-US deal front-page coverage.

'India, US seal landmark nuclear agreement,' the paper said in a four-column report. But there was no commentary.

On Thursday, the Chinese foreign ministry had said that the activities of some countries to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes are conducive to maintaining the authoritativeness and effectiveness of the NPT regime.

On Thursday, Beijing urged more nations to accede to the nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty as 'nuclear-free members.'
