Left, BJP demand statement on Indo-US pact

With India and the US clinching the nuclear deal, members belonging to Left parties and Bharatiya Janata Party [Images] in the Rajya Sabha Thursday vociferously demanded a statement from the prime minister on the agreement.

Raising the issue during a discussion on petroleum legislation, Nilotpal Basu (CPI-M [Images]) said the House should be informed immediately about the outcome of President George Bush's [Images] visit to India and the nuclear deal.

He was supported by his party colleague Brinda Karat [Images] and senior BJP leader Shushma Swaraj who demanded a statement from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh [Images] immmediately.

Responding to members' demand, Minister of State for Parliamentery Affairs Suresh Pachauri said the Prime Minister had himself said that after signing of the agreement he would give details in both Houses as Parliament was in session. The House will be informed of details, he said.
