The Congress party on Wednesday reacted sharply to Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh's comments against party president Sonia Gandhi [Images], saying he had crossed 'all limits of decency' for gaining cheap popularity.

"Just as an item girl in films crosses all limits to gain the attention of the audience, Amar Singh has become an item boy and is indulging in the same act," state Congress unit spokesman Akhilesh Pratap Singh said in Lucknow.

"Before making any statement against Sonia Gandhi, he (Amar) should realise her stature," he said, adding that the public would no longer remember Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and Amar Singh once they lost power.

Referring to Amar Singh's claim that the Income Tax department was 'harassing' superstar Amitabh Bachchan [Images] by issuing him notices, the Congress spokesman said he should stop acting like 'a spokesperson for the actor.'

"Entertainment tax was waived for 14 of Bachchan's films in the state. This surely fetched a huge amount to the family and if the Income Tax department is doing its job, the matter should not be unnecessarily politicised," he said.
