Four Assam Rifles personnel, including a havildar, were shot dead by a rifleman in Chandel district of Manipur, officials said in Imphal on Tuesday.

They said the rifleman, Sashi Kumar of the 44 Assam Rifles battalion, shot dead Havildar Ram Kumar Nepali and Rifleman Keshori Lal (both from Orissa), Subedar M B Chetri (West Bengal) and Rifleman Chandra Singh (Uttaranchal) using his service rifle.

Another rifleman, Parbat Kumar Pankaj, was injured in the incident, the officials said.

Sashi Kumar was irked by the refusal of senior officials to grant him leave, and this the cause of the incident, according to the first official report.

Police have arrested Sashi Kumar who is now in Chandel police station. Meanwhile, all the bodies were sent to the Regional Institute of Medical Science for a post-mortem examination.
