Jaya Bachchan, who in May was disqualified on the ground that she held an office of profit, on Monday took oath as a Rajya Sabha member after she was re-elected to the House.

Dismissed on the ground that she was the chairperson of Uttar Pradesh Film Development Council, Bachchan was elected on a Samajwadi party ticket.

After the disqualification, which had triggered off a massive controversy with petitions being filed against various political leaders, Bachchan was re-nominated by the party from Uttar Pradesh.

Her husband, noted film star Amitabh Bachchan [Images], daughter Shweta Nanda and UP Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav and SP Lok Sabha MP Jaya Prada were amongst those present in the gallery to watch the swearing-in function.

Chaudhury Mohammad Aslam of the Congress, eminent industrialist Rahul Bajaj, K.P.K Kumaran of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and Amir Alam Khan of the SP also took oath.
