Ambiguities in RTI to be removed

July 20, 2006 14:56 IST

A Bill to remove certain 'ambiguities' in the Right to Information Act 2005 to make it more effective and progressive will be introduced in the ensuing session of Parliament.

A meeting of the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has approved introduction of the Bill to amend the RTI Act, Information and Broadcasting Minister Priyaranjan Dasmunsi told reporters on Thursday.

He said there were 'certain ambiguities' in the Act and file notings in a 'few areas' could be exempted.

Giving an example, he said the Union Public Service Commission has expressed its concern over giving out information on the file notings. Decisions could be conveyed but not in terms of the details as to how the decisions were arrived at, he said.

Dasmunsi said such exemptions were granted in the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia.
