The United States Senate has unanimously approved a resolution condemning in the strongest terms the terrorist attacks in India and 'expressing sympathy and support for the families of the deceased victims and wounded'.

Senator Richard Lugar, Indiana Republican and chairman of the powerful Senate Foreign Relations Committee authored the resolution.

The resolution also offered its 'steadfast support to the Government of India as it seeks to reassure and protect the people of India and to bring the perpetrators of this despicable act of terrorism to justice'.

The resolution pointed out that both the US and India are 'multicultural, multi-religious democracies that abhor terrorism in all its forms and will continue to work steadfastly together to overcome terrorist ideology and establish peace and security'.

It noted that 'the people of India have long faced, with bravery and resolve, past acts of terrorism.'

The resolution, in its preamble said the 'terrorists responsible for these attacks seek to disrupt the free, democratic, and pluralistic lifestyle enjoyed by the people of India'.

It spoke of the cooperation between New Delhi and Washington 'to combat terrorism and to ensure a safer and more secure world', and resolving that the US Senate strongly condemns the attacks and expresses its condolences to the families and friends of those killed in the attacks.
