Blasts: Telecom operators rapped

July 14, 2006 02:48 IST

The Maharashtra Government has sought an explanation from the telecom operators for their alleged network failure, resulting in a total collapse of the communication system on Tuesday when 7 blasts rocked Mumbai's suburban train system.

However, the government has not yet begun any official communication with the operators and is expected to take up this issue with them soon, sources said.

Meanwhile, industry sources told PTI that the government is not going to serve any notice but may seek details of the chronology of the events that led to failure of their systems.

Earlier, on Wednesday, Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister R R Patil had signaled that the government had taken up the issue with the telecom operators.

"Talks with MTNL and other private telecom companies have revealed that the jamming of the services was the result of heavy pressure on the network, which was created immediately after the blasts," R R Patil informed the Assembly.

However, telecom operators have denied any such developments. When contacted, Hutchisson Essar Director (Operational) Harit Nagpal said that they have not received any such communications.

Airtel also denied receiving any communication from the government and declined to comment further.

The telecom services in the city were badly hampered as soon as the news of serial blast spread on Tuesday evening.

As the communication systems crippled, it resulted in panic and chaos among the people who were unable to contact their relatives.
