Indore student tops International Chemistry Olympiad

July 14, 2006 13:37 IST

A student from Indore has won a gold medal at the 38th International Chemistry Olympiad held in Gyeongsan, Korea, according to Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education.

Prathmesh Prabhu, who is also one of the merit rankers in IIT-JEE, was followed by Omkar P Wagh and Rahul Goyal of Ambala, who got silver medals and Rahul Sharma of Delhi with a bronze medal at the ICO, held between July 2 and 11, HBCSE Olympiad coordinator Dr Vijay Singh said on Friday.

Prabhu, Wagh and Goyal have joined IIT Mumbai this year while Sharma joined IIT Delhi, Singh said, adding that all the four boys secured ranks among the first 100 JEE candidates.

A total of 67 countries with 255 contestants participated in this prestigious world event for young meritorious students in chemistry.

In terms of medals tally, India was in the eighth position, he said.

The four-student team was led by Prof Shridhar R Gadre, University of Pune (head mentor) and Dr Lakshmy Ravishankar, V G Vaze College, Mumbai (mentor).

The team was trained at HBCSE for about two weeks prior to their departure for the international event, he said.

The Science Olympiad programme in India leading to international participation is implemented by the HBCSE of Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in collaboration with the Indian Association of Physics Teachers and the Indian Association of Chemistry Teacher.

The programme is jointly funded by Department of Atomic Energy, Department of Science and Technology and the National Council of Educational Research and Training through a grant by the Ministry of Human Resource Development.
