Home Minister Shivraj Patil met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh [Images] and Congress president Sonia Gandhi [Images] on Wednesday, amidst strong indications that Bihar Governor Buta Singh is on the way out.

The high-level discussions in the government are understood to have centred on how to persuade Buta Singh, who came under strong attack from the Supreme Court for his 'misleading' report that had led to the dissolution of the Assembly, to resign.

In case he refuses, he may be shown the door, sources said. On Tuesday, shortly after the judgement was delivered he ruled out his resignation.

The matter gained urgency in view of the fact that on Thursday, the Governor of the state takes the salute at the Republic Day parade and political parties have demanded his immediate resignation.
