India Saturday night rubbished as "utterly baseless and false" Pakistan's allegation that New Delhi was supporting violence in Balochistan.

"With regard to allegations of India's interference in Balochistan, we categorically reject these allegations as utterly baseless and false," External affairs ministry spokesman Navtej Sarna told reporters in New Delhi.

His reaction came when asked to comment on Pakistan's interior minister's charge that India was supporting violence in the troubled southwestern province where nationalist rebels and Pakistani security forces were engaged in heavy fighting.

"India is supporting the miscreants" in Balochistan, Pakistan's Interior Minister Aftab Ahmed Sherpao had said.

"The reaction of the neighbouring country over the action of Pakistan's law-enforcement agencies against the miscreants is clear evidence that they are being backed by India," he was quoted as saying by the local daily Dawn Friday.

India had in December expressed concern over the Pakistani military using helicopter gunships and jet fighters to bombard the rebel positions.

Pakistan responded by saying that it was interference in its internal affairs.
