The Supreme Court Monday directed the Centre to file within two weeks a status report on the Bangladeshi illegal migrants in the country.

A bench comprising Justices Ruma Pal and Dalveer Bhandari passed the order during resumed hearing of a PIL filed by Image India Foundation seeking to identify and deport all Bangladeshi illegal migrants from the country.

These migrants have adversely affected the demography of Assam, West Bengal and other bordering states.

The court also directed the petitioner to file rejoinder to the affidavit filed by the Election Commission.

The court also asked the Centre to go through the various orders passed by the Delhi high court in a writ petition pending there on the same issue.

The petitioner has also sought directions to the Election Commission to identify and debar such illegal migrants from taking part in any election.

The petitioner also pleaded that these illegal migrants were a grave threat to the national security and hence must be deported to Bangladesh immediately.
