United States President George W Bush [Images] has cleared $ 299 million in security aid for Pakistan, according to White House sources.

The aid money was made available by waiving restrictions leveled against Pakistan after President General Pervez Musharraf [Images] seized power in 1999 in a military coup.

The White House said Wednesday that the move would help US prevent acts of international terrorism and encourage the transition to democracy in Pakistan.

Pakistan is a key ally to the US that supported the US-led Afghanistan war.
