The Indian Medical Association will oppose the government's plan to administer injections for polio pulse immunisation, instead of drops.

"IMA will oppose the move to administer injections instead of drops for polio pulse immunisation drive," IMA outgoing nationl president Dr Sanjeev Malik said during the 81st IMA national conference in Patna.

Malik said that the government  proposal is based on the fact that some people are afraid to administer drops to children.

"But IMA is against such a move because it will further complicate the drive against polio," Malik said.

He said at present India has the largest numbers of polio cases. This year alone, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar accounted for most of the newly detected polio cases in the country.

IMA will also oppose the government move to end the autonomy of the Medical Council of India and it will 'intesify the stir against female foeticide'.

Malik announced  that India will hold the next SAARC Medical Association summit in 2007 and the World Medical Association International Conference in 2009.
