The police have rejected as 'baseless' media reports claiming that Ravindra Pradhan, prime accused in the murder of Meerut University lecturer Kavita Rani, retracted his statement given to them.

Meerut Range Inspector General of Police Jagmohan Yadav told UNI on Wednesday night that the reports in this regard telecast by some private channels were 'false and baseless'.

Ravindra was produced before the Additional Judicial Magistrate Khaliq-uz-Zaman but no statement was recorded.

He will again be presented before the court on Thursday and his statement may be recorded.

Ravindra had surrendered before the media during a press conference of the Senior Superintendent of Police on Sunday, claiming that he along with his accomplice Yogesh had murdered the lecturer.

The body of Dr Kavita is yet to be recovered.
