Cracking the whip in the wake of campus violence, Lucknow University authorities on Wednesday expelled 38 students, including all office-bearers of the present students' union, after finding their replies to the suspension notices unsatisfactory, university sources said.

The university had suspended 229 students and asked them to file their replies against the decision.

Of them only 80 students had sent their responses, and 38 were expelled today.

Meanwhile, some student leaders have threatened the provost of Birbal Sahni Hostel of the university M M Tripathi.

According to university officials, some leaders called the provost and threatened him with dire consequences if he did not get the rooms allotted to them. A first information report was lodged in this connection.

The expulsion of the students came a day after the authorities announced that the university would re-open on January 3, after nearly a month-long closure in the wake of students' unrest.

The university was closed sine-die by the vice chancellor citing his inability to control lawlessness on the campus owing to non-cooperation by the administration on December 8.

The VC had also declared a moratorium on students union elections and suspended as many as 229 students with alleged criminal background, mostly Samajwadi Party student wing leaders.
