The Lucknow University will re-open on January 3 after nearly a month-long closure in the wake of students' unrest following authorities' decision to expel 30 students as part their crackdown on violence in the campus.

Classes in law and management faculties will resume from January 3 next followed by undergraduate and post graduate classes from January 11, University Spokesman Manoj Dixit told PTI on Tuesday in Lucknow.

Classes in other faculties will also begin soon and all departments will be fully functional in the next few weeks, Dixit said, adding that the work of allotment of hostel rooms, which were vacated from students, will start in the next few days and possession will be given from January 2 next.

"We have decided to hand over possession of hostel rooms faculty wise to avoid rush," he said.

The decision to re-open the varsity came following an Allahabad High Court directive to vice-chancellor R P Singh to submit a proposal on resuming normal academic activities.

The authorities on Tuesday prepared a list of 30 students, who did not provide satisfactory replies to suspension notices served on them, for expulsion. The university was closed sine-die by the vice chancellor citing his inability to control lawlessness on the campus owing to non-cooperation by the administration on December 8.

The VC had also declared a moratorium on the students union elections and suspended as many as 229 students with alleged criminal backgrounds mostly Samajwadi Party student wing leaders.
