Reacting to the judgement, he claimed that the entire country was with him and added "what more could one ask for?" Reciting a Urdu couplet, Sidhu said law was taking its course and he was submitting himself in deference to judiciary in which he has full faith.

He said that he was a sportsman and could experience both defeat and win. Sidhu said Akali Dal chief Parkash Singh Badal has been a fatherly figure for him and therefore he did not miss his parents.

Terming the punishment as inadequate, Jaswinder Singh, nephew of Gurnam Singh who died after a brawl with cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu 18 years ago, said the family would move the Supreme Court against the sentence awarded to the former BJP MP by the Punjab and Haryana high court.

Jaswinder, a complainant and an eyewitness in the Patiala road rage case, said, "We were expecting at least ten-year rigorous imprisonment for Sidhu."

The punishment was inadequate and the Gurnam family would move the Supreme Court against the high court verdict, he said.

Gurnam's widow Bimaljit Kaur, in her mid-seventies, said justice did not have much meaning for her after 18 years.

"What can I say at this stage. I lost my husband 18 years ago. Justice has no meaning for me now."
