UN commends govt for quick flood relief

United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan has said he is, "...deeply saddened" over the loss of life and damage caused by the recent floods in Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat.

The United Nations stands ready to offer any assistance required by the Indian government to support the national response to the disaster, he said.

Expressing condolences to the families of those killed, he commended Indian government on its rapid "search and rescue" operations and establishment of relief camps.

More than 161 people were killed by the floods which affected over six million people.
