Surat's Agony

August 11, 2006
Ask Surtis how enormous was the flow of water, and the answer is enlightening. Pinki Shah, college student and a resident of Athwa lines, exclaimed, "Water is a weapon. Oh my God, it can kill!"

Now, of course, she is all smiles along with her sister Sneha. Both had ventured out in knee-deep water to search for diesel to run their generators at home in the absence of electricity supply.

Pinki said, "We are overwhelmed that we have survived. Nobody ever told us that our high-rise building can get marooned for five days. It was like we were living on an island."

In fact, Surat city did become an island since 5 pm last Monday. More than three million people had no electricity, no drinking water and no communication whatsoever, resulting in sanitation and food crisis.

Hundreds of high-rise buildings had become self-sufficient community centres. In most places people shared their resources, mainly food and drinking water.
