What lit up the night sky in Kutch?

Navin Joshi in Bhuj | August 01, 2006 13:33 IST

At around 9.30 pm on Monday, a luminous body appeared in the sky over Vandhiya village in the Bhachau sub-division of Kutch, Gujarat.

Villagers were stunned to see the glowing object emanating dazzling white light with deep green radiant border zooming across the sky. In its wake three strawberry-sized objects fell to the ground.

Mahendra Singh Vaghela, a farmer in Vandhiya, could not believe his eyes. Meenaben Joshi, another villager, claims that as soon as sky lit up with the passing object, she felt mild tremors. Vaghela concurs.

The objects fell on three homes in Vandhiya piercing the roofs. They have been collected and sealed by district collector Dhanjay Diwedi.

It is not yet known if this event was due to a meteor or an asteroid or something else.
