What's your verdict on rapist-cop?

April 03, 2006 14:40 IST

A Mumbai sessions court on Monday sentenced police constable Sunil Atmaram More for 12 years in jail on charges of raping a teenager inside a police chowkie (outpost) on April 21, 2005.

The 16-year-old college student was at the Marine Drive promenade, Mumbai's finest landmark second only to the Gateway of India, with her friends when More summoned them to the chowkie. After asking her friends to leave, he bolted the door and raped the girl. The rape happened in broad daylight, was committed by a policeman, and in a VIP area of Mumbai.

More was promptly dismissed from the Mumbai police, and the case put on the fast track.

The court has given its verdict. MoreĀ escapesĀ life term sought by the prosecution, and has been given 12 years in jail, and asked to pay a fine of Rs 26,500.

Do you agree with the verdict? Has More been let off lightly? Or, as he claims, have his pleas of innocence fallen on deaf ears?
