Bharatiya Janata Party leader Lal Kishenchand Advani on Sunday accused the Congress of "surrendering" to the immigrants on the issue of infiltration into Assam.

Addressing a poll rally at Kopahara in Batadraba Assembly constituency, the former deputy prime minister said that while the Congress had promised that it will not compromise on illegal immigration, the party has in fact surrendered to the immigrants for the sake of vote bank politics.

"By amending the Foreigners' Act, the Congress has, in fact, brought in the IMDT Act, which was scrapped by the Supreme Court, through the backdoor," he said.

Advani in his brief five-minute speech also accused the Congress of not delivering good governance and accused it of "destroying" the country.

He claimed that the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance government had ensured good governance and initiated several projects to develop infrastructure and economy of the country.

Advani is on a daylong visit to the state to address poll meetings at Batadraba and Dudhnoi.
