Former Uttar Pradesh minister and main accused in murder of poetess Madhumita Shukla, Amarmani Tripathy and his wife Madhumani were Wednesday prevented from surrendering before a sessions court by lawyers protesting an alleged police attack on their colleagues in Allahabad.

Amarmani, accompanied by his wife, arrived at the court, went to the office of the district judge and expressed his desire to surrender but were prevented by lawyers who gate-crashed into the judge's chamber.

Amarmani and his wife waited in the judge's chamber for about 10 minutes and left the court without surrendering.

The Supreme Court had cancelled the bail granted to Amarmani and Madhumani on Monday and directed the couple to surrender.
