Security forces shot dead a fidayeen (suicide attacker) near the heavily guarded civil secretariat building in Sutrashahi locality on Wednesday afternoon.

A senior police officer in Srinagar said paramilitary troops have surrounded the Sutrashahi locality near the civil secretrait building, which houses the office of Jammu and Kashmir chief minister, his cabinet colleagues and top officers.

"Fidayeens opened fire on the security forces seriously injuring one police constable who was taken to hospital," said a police officer.

He said security forces gunned down one fidayeen while massive search was being conducted in the area.

Police safely rescued people who were inside a cinema hall in the locality.

"We are busy searching the houses in the locality. We have reports there were two fidayeens," said the officer, on conditions of anonimity.
