Srinagar: Fidayeen attack on Civil Secretariat, one killed

Security forces shot dead a fidayeen (suicide attacker) near the heavily guarded civil secretariat building in Sutrashahi locality on Wednesday afternoon. 

A senior police officer in Srinagar [Images] said paramilitary troops have surrounded the Sutrashahi locality near the civil secretrait building, which houses the office of Jammu and Kashmir [Images] chief minister, his cabinet colleagues and top officers.

"Fidayeens opened fire on the security forces seriously injuring one police constable who was taken to hospital," said a police officer.

He said security forces gunned down one fidayeen while massive search was being conducted in the area.

Police safely rescued people who were inside a cinema hall in the locality.

"We are busy searching the houses in the locality. We have reports there were two fidayeens," said the officer, on conditions of anonimity.
