A young couple from Haryana committed suicide in Sanjauli police station late Tuesday night minutes after a taxi driver drove them there following suspicion that they were on run from their homes, police said Wednesday.

Kuljeet, 22, and Sunita, 17, consumed poisonous tablets, which they were carrying in their luggage, in the station after confessing that they were on the run from their homes following their parents' refusal for their marriage.

The police said they consumed the tablets when their attention was diverted to an accident that occurred very close to their station.

The two started vomiting soon after and before the police officials could take them to the hospital, they were dead.

The police said they had hired a taxi from Shimla to Manali in Kullu district, but the taxi driver drove them straight to the station on suspicion that they were on run.

Their bodies have been sent for post-mortem and a case had been registered and investigations were on, the police added.
