No epidemics in quake affected areas: Duggal

Government on Friday said there has been no disease or epidemic in the quake-ravaged areas of Jammu and Kashmir [Images] and the relief and rescue operations in the aftermath of October 8 temblor have been globally recognised as good.

"Barring a case of Gastroentritis, which can occur otherwise also, there has been no death due to any disease in Jammu and Kashmir. You can take my word for that. Our relief and rescue missions have been globally recognised as good," Union Home Secretary Vinod Kumar Duggal told reporters in New Delhi.

He said the Centre was making all out efforts to provide concrete shelter to the quake-hit people by November end. It was importing Artic tents capable of accommodating 30 people.

These tents are being imported from the Netherlands (1000) and Alaska in Georgia (1000) and the delivery is expected to be complete by October 31.

"The target is to reach the figure of 30,000 tents by October end," Duggal said.

He said the Urban Development Ministry was constructing 100 multi-purpose community halls in 100 villages at a cost of Rs 30 lakh per unit. These were being constructed by CPWD, NBCC and HUDCO, Duggal said and added that 30 such halls are expected to be completed by November 7 and the remaining by the end of November.

Besides this, repairs of individual houses have also started and maximum houses were likely to be repaired by middle of next month, he said, adding, "Every possible effort will be made to ensure that maximum number of concrete/ semi-concrete and pre-fab shelters are available before the onset of winter.
