A 12-hour Assam bandh called by the youth wing of former chief minister Prafulla Mahanta's new party to protest against the recent ethnic violence in Karbi Anglong district evoked partial response on Thursday even as no untoward incident had been reported so far.

Official sources said in Guwahati that the bandh was total in the lower and central Assam districts while in the upper Assam districts of Dibrugarh and Tinsukia, its effect was partial. It had no impact in the three districts of Barak Valley.

Business establishments and financial institutions remained closed, though some schools and educational institutions remained open. Attendance in the government offices was thin while most of the private offices remained closed in the affected districts.

Bus services were affected in most of the districts and only a few long-distance buses plied with police escort.     

Train services were not affected with the major trains, including the Rajdhani service, running as per schedule, a North Eastern Frontier Railway spokesman said.

Air services were also unaffected with flights operating on schedule, airport sources said.

The Jatia Yuba Parishad, Asom, had called the bandh against the ethnic violence and alleged deterioration in the law and order situation in the state. It is being supported by several organisations.
