Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leaders, including Kalyan Singh, Kesri Nath Tripathi and Lalji Tandon were Sunday detained when they tried to proceed towards Mau where communal clashes claimed seven lives.

Director General of Police Yashpal Singh said in Lucknow that there was a ban on entry of the leaders in the town.

Singh and Tripathi were detained in Shahganj area of Jaunpur district and later released while member of Parliament from Gorakhpur Yogi Adityanath was held in Gorakhpur along with 300 supporters when he was going towards Mau.

Earlier in the morning, the MP along with around 300 activists tried to proceed towards Mau, but was detained at the district border near Barhalganj town.

Yogi addressed a public meeting there and sat on a dharna. When all the efforts of police to remove him from the scene proved futile, the police decided to detain him along with party workers and leaders. He was, however, released in the evening.
