Describing the United States' envoy's views on foreign direct investment in the insurance sector as 'grave impropreity', the Communist Party of India (Marxist) asked the government on Friday to take steps to convey disapproval of his statement.

Ambassador David Mulford 'should remember that India has a democratic system, where policy decisions are taken by the elected representatives of the people and these are not decided by interests of the United States', the party politburo said in a statement.

Mulford's statement that investors would consider government policy of not hiking FDI caps in insurance and retail trade as a breach of faith 'is a grave impropreity', the CPI(M) said, adding the government 'should take appropriate steps to convey disapproval of such a statement'.
