Five days after his kidnapping by the Taliban in Afghanistan, Indian driver Maniappan Kutty was killed brutally, his throat slashed, on Wednesday.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh [Images] termed the killing a 'cowardly and brutal' act that reflected the 'cruel and inhuman character of the Taliban'.

Law Minister H R Bhardwaj, in a message to the Indian Council of Jurists, stressed the need for speedy trial in terrorism cases and awarding 'strong and swift' punishment to perpetrators of terror.
