November 22, 2005

November 22 is an important date in Bihar's electoral history.

After 15 years of Lalu rule, directly and by proxy through his wife Rabri Devi, Bihar has now said enough is enough and shown the RJD the door.

After a battle fought over two elections-- the February polls threw up a hung house-- the Janata Dal-United and Bharatiya Janata Party combine has won a simple majority.

By any and all acccounts, it is a spectacular victory. Lalu, after all, was the master of the electoral formula.

Lalu's regime, like any other, had its high points as well as low. For his supporters, he is the ultimate messiah, while to urban India he stands for everything that is loathsome about politics.

The fact remains, however, that Bihar is not part of the economic boom that the rest of India is talking about. It is a state that seems to have fallen by the wayside, and the new chief minister has his task cut out: bring the state back on the rails, restore it to its original glory.

Will Nitish Kumar deliver on the hopes and expectations riding on him? Is this the end of the road for Lalu Yadav? What is your take on this historic election result that promises to alter the ground rules of politics? Tell us!
