Curfew was relaxed on Thursday for eight hours in trouble-torn Mau, which remained calm as authorities stepped up security in view of Eid on Friday.

With no reports of any untoward incident from anywhere in the district, curfew was relaxed from 0900 to 1700 hrs, official sources here said. District officials would review the situation later on Thursday evening to decide about relaxing the curfew further to facilitate offering of special Eid prayers, sources said.

Arrangements have been made to distribute essential commodities to the people in the curfew-bound areas, sources said. Curfew was imposed in the town after communal clashes during Dussehra festival in which 12 people were killed and over 40 others injured.
