Free power to farmers could be reviewed: CM

May 04, 2005 20:03 IST

The Centre has assured Maharashtra of 'all possible help' to tide over its power crisis.

Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh met Union Power Minister P M Sayeed over the matter in New Delhi on Wednesday.

Reacting to questions on whether the state would get additional power from the Tarapur Nuclear Power Plant and Kawas and Gandhar power plants in Gujarat, Sayeed said all possibilities would be explored.

Deshmukh told reporters that he had sought the Centre's help to meet the energy shortfall through various Central schemes and NTPC projects.

He said the state could review the decision to give free power to farmers.

Meanwhile, the special meeting of the Maharashtra cabinet to discuss the power crisis has been postponed as Deshmukh is expected to meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh early on Thursday to discuss long-term plans to deal with the problem.

Maharashtra is facing a shortfall of over 3,500 MW power everyday and violent protests were witnessed in various parts of the state over the past two days.

Deshmukh and his senior cabinet colleagues had met Union Power Secretary R V Shahi on Tuesday to find a solution to the burgeoning energy crisis in the state.

Deshmukh had said the state was ready to buy power from all sources to meet the energy shortfall.
