President of India A P J Abdul Kalam has condoled the death of Lieutenant General Jagjit Singh Aurora, hero of the 1971 war to liberate Bangladesh.

In a personal letter addressed to Anita Kalra, General Aurora's daughter, President Kalam recalled the distinguished service rendered by the brave officer to the India army.

"Lt General (Retd.) Jagjit Singh Aurora was a highly decorated military officer who served the nation with great distinction in various positions. He was a soldier of that unique generation who saw service in the old British Indian Army followed by the transition to the Indian Army after Independence," Kalam said in the letter.

A wreath on behalf of President Kalam would be placed on General Aurora's body as a mark of respect to the departed soldier.

General Aurora's last rites would be conducted with full military honours at Delhi Cantonment on Thursday.
