Aftershocks rattle Sumatra

Aftershocks continued to rattle parts of Sumatra late on Monday night, after an earthquake of magnitude 8.2 on the Richter scale - 8.7, according to the US Geological Survey - occurred off the island's coast at 2138 IST.

A moderate quake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale was recorded off the west coast of Sumatra just after 0000 IST, a met department release in New Delhi said.

Another temblor, measuring 5.2, was recorded at 0019 hours IST off the west coast of northern Sumatra, it said.
