Amidst the controversy generated over a petition seeking deletion of word Sindh from the National Anthem, the Centre has submitted before the Supreme Court that any alteration of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore's composition would "almost destroy" it.

The Union government's stand was filed in an affidavit by the Home Ministry in response to the apex court's notice on a petition filed by Sanjeev Bhatnagar alleging that it was improper for continuing with the word Sindh in the anthem as the province fell within the geographical domain of Pakistan.

Submitting that the song was a literary creation, which cannot be changed, the Home Ministry said the anthem reflected India's culture irrespective of the geographical boundary and was an ode to the Bharat-Vidhata -- the Almighty.

Supporting the stand of the Union government, the Sindhi Council of India through counsel Vijay Panjwani has filed an affidavit assailing the petitioner's stand that the Pakistan government could raise an international dispute over inclusion of Sindh in India's National Anthem and pleading for inclusion of the word Kashmir substituting Sindh.
