Six militants were killed in a fierce gun battle with security forces in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir [Images] on Friday, a defence spokesman said in Srinagar [Images].

The encounter took place at Duggernar village in Kokernag area, 80 km from Srinagar early in the morning, the spokesman said.

The militants were affiliated with the Harkat-e-Jehad-e-Islami outfit, he said.

Following specific information about the presence of militants, security forces cordoned off the area and challenged the ultras. The militants then opened fire at the forces, he said.

The forces retaliated, killing six of them, he said. Four AK rifles and a pistol were recovered, he added.
