The days of Mulayam Singh Yadav's government in Uttar Pradesh are numbered, Pradesh Congress Committee president Salman Khurshid said on Tuesday.

"The government has proved to be a failure on all fronts and the condition of law and order is especially critical," Khurshid told reporters in Ballia.

He said the government would soon fall under the weight of its 'anti-people' policies.

Khurshid said the Congress had supported the formation of the Samajwadi Party-led government in UP only to keep the Bharatiya Janata Party away from power.

The government was now continuing on its own number strength and not with the help of Congress' support, he added.

Khurshid refused to comment when asked if the Congress-led central government was contemplating President's rule in the state, saying it was the prerogative of the home ministry.

He said his party would carry on with its agitation against the wrong policies of the UP government.
