Refusing to be drawn into any controversy pertaining to the religious edict in the Imrana rape case, the National Commission for Women on Thursday demanded a speedy trial and appealed against politicisation of the incident.

"The issue should not be politicised but treated on humanitarian grounds," said commission chairperson Girija Vyas, who is visiting Muzaffarnagar to meet the victim.

Vyas, however, parried comments on the edict ordering her to separate from her husband after she was allegedly raped by her father-in-law.

"Constitution is supreme," Vyas said, and demanded a speedy trial on the lines of a fast track court in Rajasthan earlier this month in which a sentence was pronounced within 16 days.

The commission has also sought security for the 28-year old victim and adequate compensation for her.
