British national Duncan Andrew Grant, an accused in a child abuse case, was arrested in Mumbai on Thursday and remanded to police custody till July 8 by a Mumbai court.

Grant was booked for child sexual abuse by the Colaba police in south Mumbai in 2001.

Grant was taken to the police station from Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, Mumbai, on Wednesday night and was produced before the metropolitan court, sources said.

Earlier, Grant's advocate asked the court to allow him to surrender before the court, but the request was denied.

Grant was accused of sexual abuse of minor street children at shelters for poor children founded by him in Mumbai and Murud.

Raju Thakur, a 15-year-old inmate of the Mumbai shelter home, had complained about the abuse to the police and with the help of a social activist, a sexual abuse case was registered against Grant and his accomplices William D'souza, an Indian national and Allan Water (British) at the Colaba police station. D'Souza and Water have already been arrested.

During a survey on poor children, the social activist found that children in the shelter were sexually and physically abused by Grant and his associates.

Duncan has been absconding since the complaint was filed, and the police had to issue a red corner notice against him.

Recently, it was reported that he was running a similar kind of shelter at Tanzania, and that he had abused children there too.

The police is interested in investigating how many such shelters Grant is associated with, in India as well as foreign countries.
