A man accused of raping his daughter-in-law in Charthawal town in Muzaffarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh has applied for bail in a local court.

The bail plea of Ali Mohammad would come up for hearing on June 27 in the court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, his lawyer V K Tyagi said.

The case made headlines after a community panchayat asked the raped woman to treat her husband as her son.

The All India Muslim Women Personal Law Board condemned the panchayat verdict as 'extremely high-handed' and
'un-Islamic.'

The Darul-u-uloom Deoband has asked a Shariat court in Muzaffarnagar to decide the issue.

Ali Mohammad was arrested on June 15 and remanded to 14 days' judicial custody by a local court.
