De-militarise Siachen: Army to Centre June 21, 2005 15:47 IST The Indian Army has given a roadmap to the Union government for converting the Siachen glacier, the world's highest battlefield, into a mountain of peace, Army Chief General J J Singh said on Tuesday. "We have given our viewpoint to the government on converting the Saltoro ridge and the glacier into a de-militarised zone," he told reporters. The army chief was responding to Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh's recent comment on converting the glacier into a mountain of peace. Special: The world's highest battlefield Recently, Singh had stressed that the army wanted Islamabad to recognise the existing ground positions on the Saltoro ridge and a monitoring mechanism be set-up as a prelude to any troop pull back.
