Nearly 600 temporary sheds, put up for tsunami affected families, were on Wednesday destroyed in a fire that broke out at Kargil Nagar in suburban Thiruvottriyur police limits, police and fire service sources said.

No one was injured, the sources said. The fire was noticed around 1215 IST and it soon spread, engulfing the huts.

Sixteen fire tenders and 25 water lorries were used to fight the blaze, which was extinguished after an hour.

The cause of the fire was under investigation, the sources said.

The government and non-governmental organisations had put up nearly 2,000 temporary shelters in the area for people who were affected by the December 26 tsunami.
